This Fall two of the world’s most beloved beverages – coffee and beer- are teaming up in the same cup. Say what? Harpoon Brewery and Dunkin’ Donuts are the magicians behind this blend, collaborating to release the “Coffee Porter,” a coffee beer brewed with Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and a six percent alcohol content.
The brew, which is technically a “flavored malt beverage,” will be bottled and labeled in the familiar purple and orange colors, featuring the slogan, “Love beer. Love life.” and an endearing tribute to Dunkin’ coffee: “This porter is our tribute to all the days that Dunkin’ has helped us fire up the brew kettle.”
While this isn’t the first time Dunkin’ has collaborated with a brewery to produce a beer (their first run was with Worcester-based Wormtown Brewery), this is the first time a beer will be widely available instead of being limited to a single taproom. While it isn’t clear exactly how widely available it will be, it’s worth noting that Harpoon distributes to 25 states on the East Coast, so there is a good chance of the porter showing up in these locations at the very least.
Harpoon spokesman Chris Bonacci mentioned that Dunkin’ and Harpoon had developed several early batches of beer for internal events, but never one they were confident enough in to share on a large scale. This batch supposedly promises rich espresso and dark chocolate notes, with a roasty and malty finish. (Our mouths are already watering, no big deal.)
The Dunkin’ Coffee Porter will be released sometime in late October or Early November. Secretly, we’re hoping for Halloween time. After all, what could be more perfect than your beer dressing up as coffee, and vice versa?
Leaving us to fantasize about the outcome and prep our palate, a Harpoon Brewery representative states, “Hopefully, it’ll be worth the wait.”
