Sonic Cheeseburger Review

Sonic Cheeseburgers are an American classic. In the early days of Sonic, you could order a cheeseburger, a hot dog, or a root beer, and the restaurant has stayed true to its roots while expanding and evolving with the changes in trends. Now, of course, you can order a Sonic Cheeseburger, a chicken sandwich, a hotdog or corn dog, chicken strips, delicious greasy sides, and one of their drinks – of which there are over a million choices and combinations. Literally. With more than 3,600 Sonic locations in 45 states, chances are, you even have one nearby. And how fun is it to receive your meal from a carhop on roller skates?

History and Inspiration

Today Sonic is best known for its incredible number of drink selections, but it began as a root beer stand on the outskirts of Shawnee, Oklahoma. It was an idea by Troy Smith who needed a way to earn a living after WWII. Founded on excellent leadership, innovation, collaboration, and great food, Sonic has grown in popularity and is an ingrained part of the fast-food community. After Sonic experienced a recession in 2009-2010, the franchise built a better burger with a bigger patty and bun coverage, added a few new items, and changed their marketing tactics. Now Sonic and their cheeseburger are back on top. 

Types of Sonic Cheeseburger

The Sonic Cheeseburger is the classic burger, but you can also order the SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger, the SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger, the Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster, or a combo of any of these, which comes with medium fries or tots and a medium soft drink. 

The classic Sonic Cheeseburger is made with 100% pure beef patty, melted American cheese, crinkle-cut pickles, chopped onions, fresh shredded lettuce, and sliced tomatoes on a seasoned bun. You can choose mustard, mayo, or ketchup – or order it without any condiments. 

1.      Taste and Texture [4/5]

The patties on SONIC burgers are standard quarter-pounders, 100% pure ground beef produced exclusively in USDA inspected plants, and they meet all USDA requirements for 100% Ground Beef Patties. These are decent-sized burgers comparable to the Burger King Whoppers. The beef patties lean a little towards the dry side, but they are still tasty and well-seasoned. If you happen to order your cheeseburger with bacon, you’ll be happy you did – Sonic’s bacon strips are crispy, curly, and meaty – just the way bacon should be. The burger is hot, so the cheese is nice and melted. But the lettuce strips and tomatoes, pickles, are still crisp and fresh. I like my burger with all of the condiments – mustard, mayo, and ketchup, but you can order it any way you like. The burger comes in a foil wrapper, convenient for eating on the go. 

2. Are they healthy? [2/5]

Sonic Cheeseburgers contain between 710-800 calories, depending on your choice of options, and they also contain trans fat, which is the worst kind of fat you can eat. While the SuperSONIC Bacon Double Cheeseburger is the least healthy item on the menu, the Cheeseburger isn’t too much better with g of fat and 1190 mg of sodium. If you’re craving a cheeseburger but you’re concerned about the calories and carbs, you might choose the Jr. burger, or you can omit the cheese. Sonic also offers healthier options such as their Grilled Chicken Salad (310 calories, 13 g fat, 1,070 mg sodium), the Santa Fe Chicken Salad (380 calories, 15 g fat, 1,180 mg sodium) with fat-free Golden Italian dressing, or the Grilled Chicken Wrap (380 calories, 11 g of fat and 1,440 mg of sodium).

3. Are they Worth it? [4/5]

The Sonic Cheeseburger is a  good-sized burger, packed with savory ingredients, but not so packed that you can’t eat it on the go. The price is comparable to other fast food burgers but it’s less than a similar Whopper. The nutritional value isn’t great, but it’s perfect when you have a craving or need a good full meal. The combo meals are an excellent deal- still a better price than comparable combo meals. I prefer a side of tater tots and a nice slush to wash it down. 

Final Verdict

The service is fast, the restaurants are clean, the staff is quick on their feet (and their roller skates), which makes eating at Sonic an enjoyable experience. I like visiting Sonic, and I can always order something different while still receiving consistent quality and flavor.
