Olive Garden is one of the most readily available and affordable Italian casual-dining restaurants, but it’s more styled after American-Italian food, not authentic Italian. But who’s complaining, right? Each generously-portioned dish is infused with savory flavors, and if they’re the best of Italy and America, then that works for me. Olive Garden’s Lasagna Classico is no exception – the best of both worlds.

History and Inspiration

Olive Garden’s menu items include pasta, steaks, seafood, soups, and salads. The Lasagna Classico has been on their Classic Entrees Menu since the beginning, alongside some of the famous chicken, seafood, and pasta dishes. The chain has since added a family portion to accommodate families and groups.

Types of Lasagna Classico

While the lasagna itself is the same, you can order two different serving sizes of Olive Garden’s Lasagna Classico. The regular entree is a generous portion that can likely feed two people if you’re also eating salad and breadsticks. Or you can order the Family-Style Lasagna Classico Bundle, which includes lasagna, the Famous House Salad, a dozen breadsticks, and a two-liter bottle of Coke, Diet Coke, or Sprite. This size feeds up to eight people, and it’s an excellent choice for a group. Olive Garden also offers a customizable lasagna called “Lasagna Mia,” where you can design your own dish from four sauces and six toppings. This is a great option for vegetarians.

Olive Garden Lasagna Classico

1.      Taste and Texture [5/5]

Olive Garden prepares this dish daily, so it’s made with fresh ingredients. Their meat sauce makes this dish stand out, as it’s marinated with pan-seared beef and Italian sausage – a perfect mixture. The combination of cheeses complement the meat sauce, and it literally melts in your mouth. And the noodles are soft enough to eat but sturdy enough to hold this masterpiece together. Each bite is full of flavor and cooked perfectly- you won’t find any “cold spots” towards the middle or “burned corners.” It’s a quality dish that I enjoy with breadsticks, the house salad, and a nice glass of sangria.

2. Is it healthy? [2/5]

Most heavy comfort food dishes aren’t particularly healthy. They pack a lot of carbs and calories, as well as saturated fats, which can cause complications if consumed too frequently. This dish has more than the daily recommended amount of sodium as well, so this meal is best reserved for special occasions or weekends if you’re on any dietary restrictions. On the plus side, there are 47 grams of protein, so if you’re looking to bulk up some muscle, maybe you can use this dish to your advantage. Just be sure to eat it early in the day instead of late at night.

3. Is it Worth it? [5/5]

You can’t go wrong with a classic Italian dish. Lasagna is perfect for lunch or dinner, as a single serving or as a dish to feed a large group. It works for gatherings or parties as well as an intimate meal for two. The flavors are fantastic, the portion size is generous, and each layer is cooked to perfection. The pan-seared beef and Italian sausage make this dish stand out, and the price is reasonable for such a savory dish.

Final Verdict

This classic dish is everything you’d expect from a lasagna. It tastes like home-cooked comfort food, layered with all the most savory mouth-watering flavors. With filling portions and a high-quality recipe, this lasagna is definitely in my top five favorite dishes at Olive Garden.

Lasagna Classico Pricing

The Lasagna Classico is priced around $18.50, depending on the location. With most of the other entrees priced between $15 and $20, this is priced just right. The Family-Style Lasagna Bundle is priced at $76, and it includes the Lasagna Classico, the Famous House Salad, a dozen breadsticks, and a two-liter bottle of Coke, Diet Coke, or Sprite. This meal feeds about eight people, so it’s a fantastic deal for a group or large family.

I ordered the lasagna the other day and it was the worst I have ever eaten. It was mushy, the noodles were so overcooked, the meat tasted funny, the sauce was terribly weak like it was watered down and there was green splotches all over the top. I would never order this again for $22. Needless to say I didn’t eat this and left hungary.
