While I do appreciate the standard bread and meat meal with fries on the side when I indulge in my fast food cravings, sometimes I want to try something different, something daring, something that I can eat with a spoon.

Yeah, I know, most of you probably don’t want to eat fast food with spoons, unless of course it is a delicious cold and creamy ice-cream with Oreos and caramel topping, drizzled with… I could go on. KFC’s Famous Bowl is different and delicious, so let me convince you why you should include it in your list of favorite KFC menu items.

History of the Famous Bowl

Despite its name, it was not part of the original KFC lineup. It came to the menu sometime in the 90s, and it has surprisingly stayed on the ever-changing KFC menu. It has stayed pretty much the same the entire time, and it is as delightful now as it was back in the 90s.

The Inspiration

Everything that makes up the Famous Bowl has been a part of the KFC menu for decades, but now they have been combined into something truly delicious. They call it a true classic even though it’s not part of the original menu. Made from smooth potato mash, amazing fried chicken bites, sprinkled with firm corn, topped with the flavorful homemade-inspired gravy, and mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack cheese.

Two Types

Recently KFC has introduced a Spicy Famous Bowl that is pretty much the same as the original but with the restaurant’s signature Nashville hot sauce drizzled on top. A great addition for all the spice lovers out there!

Taste and Texture

The Famous Bowl has a great balance of taste and texture, and it’s all due to the great choice of layering; all the ideal components mentioned above. KFC’s mashed potatoes are amazing as they are super

creamy and not too dense for an amazing mouthfeel.

The requisite brown gravy adds all the needed flavor and fat that brings the mash to the next level. The corn is simple but cooked to perfection and provides a satisfying sensation as you bite through it. The fried chicken is boneless, and the crispiness provides a much-needed texture to the creamy mash below. The chicken is well seasoned but not overly so, so as to not ruin the balance of the meal.

And finally, the three-cheese blend is the ideal topping, lending that additional bit of smoothness and fat. Everything just goes perfectly together as it represents an amalgam of all of the things that make KFC great.

If you require a bit more kick to the savory goodness of the meal, you should definitely try the spicy one. The addition of the Nashville hot sauce is a welcome one, and not just for those who are into hot sauce.

Is It Healthy?

Well no, it’s not actually. The bowl has 720 calories from 23g of protein, 79g of carbohydrates (of which 3g is sugars), 34g of fat, and 6g of fiber.

Of the fat content, we have 7g of saturated fat and 0g of trans fat. The latter is the only saving grace as there are also 45mg of cholesterol and 2370mg of sodium, and I can see how that can be a deal-breaker for some of you.

Is It Worth It?

The price of the bowl is $3 (assuming you don’t live in one of those cities where everything is more expensive) for 1 pound of food. This makes it totally worth it in my book, as there aren’t that many fast food restaurants that can offer you that amount of food for such a low price while also being tasty as well.

Final Verdict

KFC’s Famous Bowl offers a well-balanced mixture of proteins, carbs, and fats, coming from the best ingredients available in KFC’s arsenal of foods. The layering of the ingredients provides the texture and taste that make you want more. The price is really good for the amount you get.

The only downside is that it’s not healthy, but who goes to a fast food place to stay healthy anyway? My advice is to go out there and try it as it may surprise you to discover how good it actually is.
