Oat milk is the new plant-based burger. Dunkin’ recently announced that come springtime, they will be adding a new option to their milk lineup – oat milk. Dunkin’s announcement followed soon after the one Starbucks made about their Oatmilk Honey Latte. Serving as the face of this promotion will be Dunkin’s new Oat Milk Latte, a classic espresso latte made with steamed oat milk and your choice of add-ins. On its own, the latte will be naturally vegan, as well. The new dairy alternative will also be available to add to hot, cold, and blended coffee and espresso beverages that Dunkin’ serves.
The new Oat Milk Latte is currently in its testing phase at a few locations in California. The coffee chain is partnered with Planet Oat, the brand that will be supplying Dunkin’ with its new nondairy option.
For those who have not sipped on this dairy alternative, oat milk tastes quite similar to regular milk. According to EatingWell.com, “Oat milk is thicker and naturally sweeter than many non-dairy milks.” Oat milk is naturally gluten-free and has several health benefits. For instance, it is high in protein and has been known to help regulate cholesterol levels. Plus, the process of making oat milk is better for the environment, which has been a huge topic of discussion in the fast-food industry over the past few years (remember the plastic straw situation?).
The other non-dairy milk option on Dunkin’s menu is almond milk, which was added back in 2014. Many of Dunkin’s locations already serve a plant-based menu item, the Beyond Sausage Sandwich. It can also be made vegan if you opt for one without egg and cheese.
Based on the first couple of weeks, 2020 will be the year of plant-based fast food.
