Subway Bread Recipe

The best sandwich subs are made with fresh ingredients and soft bread. Subway is known for its slightly chewy homemade flavor, but the best way to achieve a true homemade flavor is to make it at home. I like to set up my kitchen with a sandwich-making buffet line, just like Subway. My kids can choose all of their favorite toppings and dressings, and it’s a fun colorful way to make a nice healthy lunch together. But instead of using store-bought buns, now we can make our own. The kids like to shape the dough, and because the Subway bread recipe is simple with only a few ingredients, we can easily make them together.

This Subway bread recipe calls for a standing mixer to make kneading the dough easier. But if you don’t have a standing mixer, you can knead the dough by hand as long as it’s kneaded for 8 full minutes. It takes some effort and some muscle, but take turns with your kids or other family members, and make it a team effort.

After the loaves have baked, brush them with butter and cover with a towel to let them cool. Then you can slice them in half lengthwise and start filling them with all of your favorite veggies and toppings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
  • 1 tbsp yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • First add the water, yeast, sugar, salt, and olive oil In the bowl of your standing mixer. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes.
  • Add 1 cup of flour to the bowl, and mix with the dough hook for 3 to 5 minutes. Add an additional cup of flour and mix until well-combined. Continue adding the flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a soft dough is formed. The dough should stick to the bottom of of the bowl, but pull away from the sides. Let the dough mix for around 8 minutes total.
  • Next, take out the dough, place it onto a lightly floured surface, and knead until smooth. The dough should be very soft. Shape the dough into a ball and return it to the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise for a half-hour.
  • After the dough has risen, divide it into 4 pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long skinny loaf that is about 9 to 10 inches long.
  • Place the rolled loaves onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the dough. Allow at least 2 inches between each loaf on the pan. Cover the loaves with a greased piece of plastic wrap and allow the loaves to rise until they double in size, about an hour.
  • Towards the end of the rising time, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. When the loaves are ready, bake them in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  • When the loaves come out of the oven, rub the tops with a stick of butter and cover them with a dish towel to cool. Let the loaves cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting down the middle and topping with your favorite sandwich fixings.

Notes

  • Be sure to rub the loaves with butter and cover them with a towel to cool as this keeps them soft.
  • If you want to make wheat bread buns, you can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • This recipe can be made by hand by kneading it for a full 8 minutes.
