Now that warmer temperatures are coming back around, this is the perfect time to check out some of Sonic’s sweet treats, especially the Sonic Blasts – a delicious blend of ice cream and candy or cookie pieces with whipped cream on top.

Sonic rolled out their Blasts in the winter of 2014. Some customers thought it was a bit strange to offer a new line of frozen treats in the middle of frozen weather, but the Blasts were a hit. Really, ice cream is perfect at any time of the year, isn’t it?

The idea behind offering Sonic Blasts was to make their famous milkshakes more indulgent with premium flavors and ingredients. Besides, other fast-food chains began offering similar desserts, such as the McDonald’s McFlurry and Wendy’s Frosty. Just for extra pizazz, Sonic is now offering a flavorful core to each SONIC Blast with a Flavor Funnel of peanut butter, caramel, Oreo stuffing, or chocolate.  The Flavor Funnels run right through the middle of the Sonic Blast from top to bottom, so you can enjoy even more flavor with each bite!

Sonic Blasts Review

Sonic Blasts kick the milkshakes into high gear with extra sweet flavors using some of our favorite candies and cookies. The franchise uses real vanilla ice cream, but they mix it or whip it so that it’s more like a shake than ice cream. It’s rich, full-bodied, and creamy, making it one of America’s favorite ice cream choices. The blend of candies is excellent – you’ll likely get at least one bite of candy in each spoonful. And with various sizes, you can decide your level of indulgence.

1.      Taste and Texture [5/5]

I’m a big fan of Sonic’s ice cream and milkshakes. I love that they use real vanilla ice cream, and the whipping gives it that extra body I enjoy. I also appreciate that I can both drink it with a straw and eat it with a spoon. Each Sonic Blast has it’s own candy flavor, and I mostly enjoy Reese’s and Butterfinger pieces in my Blasts. The Flavor Funnel is a bit too much sweetness for me, but if I had to pick a favorite, I would choose the Oreo cream stuffing. I mean, the cream is the best part of the Oreo!

2. Nutrition Facts – Are They Healthy [1/5]

As you might expect, the super sweet Sonic Blast is not the healthiest dessert you can purchase. It’s pretty high in calories and carbs, so it might be better to save these for a free day or a special occasion. I can never finish one – even a small, but my kids help me out with that.

Nutrition Facts based on a Large Sonic Blast

  • 1880 calories
  • 305 mg cholesterol
  • 1160 mg sodium
  • 233 g carbs
  • less than 1 gram of dietary fiber
  • 203 grams of sugars
  • 27 grams of protein

3. Are they Worth it? [4/5]

If you’re looking for a dessert while you’re on the go, this is a great choice. The price is decent, and the sweetness factor can be kicked up a few notches, depending on your preference. The candies and cookies are popular choices for most of us, and mixing and matching is part of the fun. With the additional option of including a Flavor Funnel, the Sonic Blasts have plenty of delicious flavor combinations.

Final Verdict

While some other franchises offer similar desserts, I prefer Sonic’s because their ice cream flavor is so delicious. You really can’t go wrong with any of the added flavors because the base is so good. I prefer a Sonic vanilla milkshake to a more indulgent Blast because I don’t feel as full or heavy after having one, and I like to sip it as a drive. However, I’ll try almost anything with Reese’s or Butterfinger in it. This is a sweet sugary treat that everyone in the family enjoys, and because it can be ordered in a drive-in or a drive-through, it makes for a great dessert option.

Sonic Blasts Pricing

Sonic ice cream is some of the least expensive around. Prices start at as low $2.19, and with other dessert options, they’re usually no more than about $5. Sonic Blasts are a popular menu item, and even with all the tasty candies and cookies, the prices are still affordable from $2.89 for a small to a little over $5 for a large.
