Just when we thought the fast food chicken wars had died down, KFC steps up to the plate with a brand new chicken sandwich. And yes, it looks a heck of a lot like Popeyes’. The fried chicken chain announced the debut of their new-and-improved sandwich this week, and it’s being tested in Orlando, Florida, for the time being.
The KFC Chicken Sandwich features the restaurant’s extra crispy chicken filet with pickle slices and mayo (regular or spicy). All the ingredients are sandwiched in between a toasted brioche bun. While this version resembles the Crispy Colonel Sandwich, there are a couple of major differences: the KFC Chicken Sandwich comes with an even thicker chicken filet, and the brioche bun is sturdier and more flavorful than the one on the Crispy Colonel Sandwich.
Per a press release, chief marketing officer of KFC U.S, Andrea Zahumensky said, “We wanted a chicken sandwich that really lives up to our legacy as the fried chicken experts, and, let’s face it, ours wasn’t the one to beat.”
Zahumensky is likely referencing front-runners Popeyes and Chick-Fil-A, who stole headlines most of last fall when Popeyes released a new chicken sandwich that rivaled Chick-Fil-A’s classic option. We didn’t hear a peep from KFC during that time, though their menu wasn’t unfamiliar with chicken sandwiches. KFC has offered multiple options, like the Double Down, Fried Chicken and Donuts sandwich, and the Crispy Colonel Sandwich. However, none of those options have made the splash as big as competitors.
Popeyes and Chick-Fil-A aren’t the only places with kickass chicken sandwiches, though. Check out this list of the best chicken sandwiches in 2020.
