Copycat Big Mac Recipe

McDonald’s is known for its fast service, unbeatable French fries, and burgers – most notably, the Big Mac. While it might be next to impossible to recreate McDonald’s French fry recipe, we do have a delicious Copycat Big Mac Recipe that you can easily create right from your own kitchen.

One thing that makes this recipe unique is the Special Big Mac Sauce. It’s made with mayo, relish, sugar, and Thousand Island dressing. Mix it in a bowl and cover it with a lid. It’s best to make this sauce before you prepare the burgers because the flavors should marinate for awhile – at least 20 minutes, but better to allow it to sit for a few hours or overnight.

Big Mac’s are made with 3 buns. The best way to do this is to purchase a bag of eight buns. Cut the tops off of two of the buns to make them flat and even with the bottom half of the buns. Use those as the middle bun in each of the Big Macs. Using this method, you can prepare five Big Macs.

Be sure to season your meat before grilling, and toast the buns with butter. This will give your Big Mac’s the most savory flavors.

Ingredients

For the Big Mac

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 5 slices American cheese
  • 1 tbsp minced onion
  • 15 slices Dill pickles
  • 1/2 onion in slices
  • 1/4 head iceberg lettuce

For the Special Sauce

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp India relish, drained
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp Thousand Island dressing

Instructions

For the Special Sauce

  • Mix all of the ingredients well. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes, but overnight is best.

For the Big Mac

  • In a large bowl, combine ground chuck and salt and pepper. Shape the ground meat into 10 thin meat patties. Heat a large griddle or pan to 350°, and place the meat patties onto the griddle. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, and season with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Flip the patties and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, or until the juices from the meat run clear.
  • Spread softened butter on the cut sides of the buns and place them on the griddle until the bread begins to brown.  Flip the middle bun and allow it to toast on both sides.
  • Build the burger by starting at the bottom. The bottom bun, the Special Big Mac sauce, onions, lettuce, cheese, hamburger patty, and the middle bun. Then spread the Big Mac sauce, onion, lettuce, hamburger patty, two or three pickle slices, and finally the top bun.

Notes

  • Big Macs have three layers of buns, so if you use a package of eight hamburger buns you can make about five homemade Big Macs.  Cut the top off of the top bun to make it even, then use the bottom half as the middle portion of the Big Mac.
